Ask the Experts: One on One with a Lawyer

The lawyer is in! Make an appointment to sit down with a lawyer and discuss your arts-related legal issue for thirty minutes. Attorneys can assist with general questions related to contracts, copyrights, business formation, employment issues, and more. You must make an appointment to attend! To make an appointment, email admin@kcvlaa.org, with the subject line "Ask the Experts." In your email, please give us a general idea of the type of issue or question you want to discuss (so we know what kind of lawyer to match you up with).

The Art of the Contract & Licensing

Contracts are the cornerstone of any business, but for artists, much of the information comes in the form of anecdotes from other artists or from the internet (not the most reliable source!). In this seminar you will learn the general principles of contract formation, drafting and negotiation, including:
Does it have to be in writing?
What's fair?
What language has to be in there to protect me?
What if the deal goes sour?
How do I negotiate a contract?
Many of these same principles will be address regarding licensing agreements as well.

This workshop is for artists and arts groups who want to form non-profit organizations, and who have worked through the KCVLAA's non-profit formation workbook. In this workshop, you'll learn the filing, reporting and administrative requirements for arts non-profits, as well as strategies for preparing an effective Form 1023. Sales Tax & Small Business Taxation for Artists
