Showing on January 13^th and 15^th is the latest chapter in the tetralogy “rebuild” of the original anime series NEON GENESIS EVANGELION entitled EVANGELION 3.0: YOU CAN (NOT) REDO.  A gigantic hit in Japan, the series revolves around a young pilot, Shinji Ikari, navigating a giant ‘mecha’ called the Evangelion which has been designed to protect the planet from giant terrifying creatures known as ‘Angels’.
The latest entry begins with Shinji Ikari just waking up fourteen years after starting cataclysmic incident known as the Third Impact. He hasn’t aged, but everything else has changed. The earth is in ruins. The people he once protected treat him like a prisoner and threaten to kill him if he pilots another Eva. At NERV headquarters, Shinji meets a quiet pianist named Kaworu. As the boys bond, the organization’s true mission comes into focus. Lost in a labyrinth of deception, Shinji careens toward a mental breakdown that could bring about the end of humanity.

After last year's amazing success, it's time to get toony again!

Do you have an animated short or feature that you would like to see on the LARGEST screen in the state of Kansas (75 x 100 ft.)?  What about screening them along side some of entertainment's hottest animators working right here in the Kansas City metro area?  How about getting feedback right from the artists?  MAPA and CinemaKC are joining forces to make make it all happen again.

The Midwest Association of Professional Animators (MAPA) is proud to once again partner with CinemaKC to present our annual Animation Celebration on Saturday, Sept. 7, 2013.  Special thanks again to the Neal family for allowing our event to be held again at the Boulevard Drive-in, 1051 Merriam Lane, Kansas City, KS 66103.

This rare opportunity will give student, amateur and professional animators a chance to screen, discuss and answer questions about their respective works side-by-side.  Furthermore, the Boulevard's ground camera will give willing artists a chance to make their own silver screen debuts and talk about their works before our live audience.

All submissions should be a .mov or mpeg file, scaled to 1280x720. They must all include a complete credit list. There is no cost for submission. Deadline to submit is August 21, 2013.  Please contact Dylan, Taylor or Doug at midwestanimators@gmail.com.

Spots open for short animated films in Summer 2013

Dear Artists,

I have two open spots for short animated films for a season 3 episode of CinemaKC TV. 

Two things if you want to submit:

1.       You have to be available for an interview during our shoot dates in June

2.       You must not have been featured in a previous CKCTV episode.

MAPA is also filling 80 minutes for the Independence Film Festival in August and 120 min for Animation Celebration in the Fall.  If you are interested in having your work in any of these shows, please reply asap.

Black Sheep Animation Festival at KCAI

Well, as many of you may have heard, the seniors at KCAI’s animation department are one week away from revealing their student creations at the Frame by Frame Festival.  What many of you don’t know is that means the sophomore and juniors are taking over the Irving Ampitheatre, 4402 Oak Street, KCMO Friday and Saturday this week.

Seating is limited, so you may want to contact the Animation Department to make sure there’s room.

Friday screenings run from 6:00 – 10:00 P.M.

Saturday screenings run from Noon until 4:00 P.M.

So come out and get a sneak peek at the fresh ink coming out of Kansas City!

 Call for Entries Now Open for 2013 Heartland Film Festival

 Academy Award® qualifying festival expands its award field with additional categories and cash prizes for independent films.

(INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.) – Independent filmmakers can now submit films for consideration to the 22nd Annual Heartland Film Festival. The 10-day Festival, which will be held in Indianapolis, Ind., October 17-26, 2013, serves to inspire filmmakers and audiences through the transformative power of film. Filmmakers participating in the Festival attend numerous screenings of their films and other special events designed to allow interaction between filmmakers and audiences.   
The Heartland Film Festival is a qualifying festival for the Annual Academy Awards® in the Short Films Category. This means that the winner of the Grand Prize for Best Narrative Short Film will qualify for consideration in the Short Films category of the Annual Academy Awards® without the standard theatrical run, provided the film otherwise complies with the Academy rules. Three 2012 Heartland Film Festival Award Winners were selected as nominees for the 2013 Academy Awards® and one, “Inocente,” won the Oscar® for Best Documentary, Short Subject.
“Our number of submissions spiked dramatically last year,” said Tim Irwin, artistic director of Heartland Truly Moving Pictures. “We expect the numbers to grow again this year and have expanded our Festival Awards field with additional categories and cash prizes. Heartland is truly a filmmakers’ festival and we’re excited to offer even more ways to honor and share these films with Indianapolis audiences.”

Filmmakers are invited to submit independently-produced feature length and short films in Narrative and Documentary categories. Student filmmakers are encouraged to apply for consideration within the standard field of competition. High school filmmakers are encouraged to enter their films in the High School Film Competition, now entering its fourth year.
Submissions will be evaluated for their achievement of excellence in filmmaking and alignment with Heartland’s mission to inspire filmmakers and audiences through the transformative power of film. Submissions are accepted through Withoutabox.com.
Volunteer screening committees will help narrow down the initial field of competitors. Juries comprised of individuals from the scholarly film community, local film critics and previous Heartland Film Festival filmmakers will review the submissions and select five narrative features, five documentary features, five narrative short films and five documentary short films including student films, as winners. Outstanding films will be recognized with Heartland Film Festival Awards and more than $125,000 in cash prizes, including a Grand Prize for Best Narrative Feature, Grand Prize for Best Documentary Feature, Grand Prize for Best Narrative Short Film and Grand Prize for Best Narrative Short Film.  

Completed U.S. and international feature length and short films may be submitted by May 1 for early consideration and a reduced submission fee. The regular deadline to submit films for the 2013 Heartland Film Festival is June 15.

Support IFC 2013 Fantasy Filmmaker Draft

On January 30th, the IFC 5th Annual Fantasy Filmmaker Draft film project will officially begin.  For those of you that haven’t been involved in a FFD before, it is a truly unique filmmaking experience.  The goal of this project is to give you the opportunity to work with others with whom you have never worked before. While it is hoped that the final production is of high quality, that goal is second to learning to work with new people. Everyone who wants to participate, will.  See the bottom of the page for details.
Here is how it works:

January 30th – Writer/Director/Producer Draft

• Five team captains will be randomly drawn from the list of those who wish to participate as a team captain.  These team captains will choose which position on their own team they will fill (producer, writer, or director).
• In ‘fantasy football draft’ fashion, each team captain selects a writer, a director, or a producer.  Captain A will select one position, followed by Captain B, followed by Captain C, etc.  This continues until each team’s principal positions are filled.

February 6-March 6 – The Writing

Immediately following the draft, the writers for each team begin the writing process, with each script building off the previous writer’s work.  Writer A will write 5-7 pages and give it to Writer B.  Beginning where Writer A left off, Writer B will write 5-7 pages and give it to Writer C, and so on.  At the end of the writing process there will be one cohesive story, with five distinct chapters, collaboratively written by the five different writers.

• Script 1 due February 6
• Script 2 due February 13
• Script 3 due February 20
• Script 4 due February 27
• Script 5 due March 6 – All five writers meet to finalize and make the scripts cohesive.

March  13 – Cast & Crew Draft

Teams will gather to choose the rest of their filmmaking team.  Teams will choose:

• actors
• editors
• directors of photography
• crew
• all the rest of their team (extras, PA’s, scriptys)

March 14- April 2 – Film Production

Teams will have these three weeks to produce their film.  They will plan, shoot, edit, and then turn in their finished product at the Wednesday night meeting on April 4th.

April 6 – Public Screening

All five films will be put together to make one film in five chapters.  The film will be screened for the public, with refreshments and socializing included at the screening.

To Participate

Because of the unique nature of this event, filmmakers of all skills are encouraged to participate.  Industry veterans, newbies, professionals and amateurs can all work together on one project.  Everyone is welcome to participate whether an IFC member or non-member.  There is a $5 entry fee for IFC members, $10 for non-members.  To be eligible for the Draft, participants must indicate the positions in which they are interested.   To participate contact president@ifckc.com .  Official Rules will be released shortly, until then you can see last years rule here .

Annual Kansas International Film Festival (KIFF) October 5-11

THE 12th ANNUAL KANSAS INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL,  2012

We are gearing up for the 12th Annual Kansas International Film Festival (KIFF) October 5-11, 2012 at the Glenwood Arts in Overland Park, Kansas.  KIFF is a 501(C)(3) not-for-profit, specializing in showcasing Independent films, featuring over 50 Documentary and Narrative films for the week from all over the world.

The normal price for a pass before Sept. 21st is $50.00 and after that it is $60.00; otherwise, general admission rates apply. Festival pass holders are seated before general admission.

Animation Celebration Review: MAPA Loves Bennie and Ike

Thanks to everyone who made the first MAPA Animation Celebration a huge success!  We certainly have a very talented and cutting-edge industry growing right here in the heart of the Midwest.

I am proud to report we had 102 cars show up for our event Saturday night.  Proceeds go to support the ongoing work of CinemaKC and to get MAPA a step closer to our goal of non-profit status.

Thank YOU Kansas City and to Wes and Brian at the Boulevard Drive-in for hosting this amazing event.  We also thank the more than 30 animators who contributed work to this show and will include a full list of all the films this week on the blog.

But before we congratulate those whose work was seen at the Celebration, here are two that got left out.  For whatever reason, the artwork of Bennie Thompson and "Clocked in" by Isaac Ahloe both flaked out of the program.  So in honor of Ike and Bennie, below are some of their work.

Some Kansas City animators will soon see their short films on the largest screen in the state of Kansas!  The Midwest Association of Professional Animators (MAPA) is proud to propose a joint partnership with CinemaKC and 41 Action News in bringing the Midwest its first and only "Animation Celebration" on Saturday, Sept. 8, 2012. It will be held at the Boulevard Drive-in, 1051 Merriam Lane, Kansas City, KS 66103.

MAPA proudly announces our first submissions.  From Trent Coffin, "Welcome to Corporate City."  We also will see work from animator Dan Wood who also works as an Associate at Populous.  We will take a look inside the CAPS program at Blue Valley North, a peek at the motion designers of the future working at KCAI and at Johnson County Community College and much more.

Individual artists will present their works safely beneath the Boulevard's lastest addition!  A 1000 sq. ft. stage area protected from those incidental rains.
